Children’s Braces: When to Start and What Parents Should Know?

Making sure your child has a confident, healthy grin is one of your top priorities as a parent. Even though many parents recognize the need for regular dental checkups, they might not be aware of how important orthodontic treatment is to a child’s oral health. In addition to producing straight teeth, orthodontic treatment—such as braces—also promotes healthy jaw alignment, guards against long-term dental problems, and increases a child’s self-esteem.

To get the greatest outcomes, it can be crucial to recognize the warning signals that your child may require braces and to know when to make an appointment for an orthodontic evaluation.

Indications that your child may require braces

Early identification of orthodontic problems enables prompt intervention, which can streamline and reduce the duration of treatment. The following are some telltale indicators that your child might benefit from kids braces (จัดฟันเด็ก, term in the Thai):

Teeth that are crowded or crooked

When there is not enough room in the jaw for every tooth to fit correctly, crowding happens. Children frequently need braces because misaligned teeth make it harder to brush and floss, which raises the risk of gum disease and cavities.

    Underbite or overbite

An underbite is when the lower teeth sit ahead of the upper teeth, whereas an overbite is when the upper and lower front teeth overlap too much. If neglected, both disorders can result in uneven teeth, speech issues, and difficulty chewing.

    The crossbite

When some upper teeth rest behind the lower teeth, it is known as a crossbite. If this problem is not treated in childhood, it may result in uneven growth and misalignment of the jaw.

Early or late baby tooth loss

How permanent teeth erupt can be influenced by when baby teeth fall out. Your child may require orthodontic treatment if they lose baby teeth too soon or too late, which might cause their adult teeth to become misaligned.

    Breathing via the mouth

Orthodontic issues may arise from persistent mouth breathing, which can impact the development of the jaw and facial structure. Baby teeth braces (จัดฟันน้ำนม, this is the term in the Thai) can help with these problems when used in conjunction with other therapies.

    Speech issues

Misaligned teeth or jaw problems may be the cause of lisping or trouble pronouncing specific sounds. Speech clarity can be enhanced by orthodontic treatment.

    Inadequately meeting teeth

Malocclusion may be the cause if your child’s teeth do not line up properly when they bite down. Malocclusion can increase the risk of tooth damage, impair chewing efficiency, and induce jaw pain.

Thumb sucking after four years of age

Long-term thumb-sucking can alter the jaw’s form and tooth alignment, resulting in an open bite or other orthodontic issues.

    Early orthodontic consultations’ advantages

Interceptive orthodontics, another name for early orthodontic treatment, helps direct jaw growth and avert major alignment problems. Children who have jaw discrepancies or crossbites should pay particular attention to this. Orthodontists can reduce the need for tooth extractions in the future by correcting crowding early on and giving permanent teeth more room to grow in. Tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw pain—all of which can be brought on by misaligned teeth or incorrect biting—can be avoided with early treatment.
